EMERGE

PORT AU PRINCE, HAITI

Designed for emergency situations, Emerge utilizes modular architecture to address ease of transport and time efficient construction. Each space within the program comprises its own pod. Each pod may be assembled on site and may be connected to other pods. For instance, the entrance, the bedroom, and the living room are all separate pods; giving families the flexibility to add to their home should more space become a necessity.

Drawing from Haitian food culture, star anise, a popular spice used throughout Haitian dishes guided the development of the privacy and windscreens. The diamond-like shape of star anise was abstracted through the process of folding. Folding the shape resulted in the creation of a geometric pattern at 3 different scales.

According to research it is common in Haitian culture to cook outdoors as one large family. While only the homes of certain elders or community figures have a kitchen, outdoor kitchens become a local gathering space and a place to create and maintain a sense of community.
